6 Ways Your Environment Is Damaging Your Car

April 20, 2023

Cars signify freedom, style, and status. They take you wherever you want to go conveniently and comfortably. There's so much discussion about the impact of cars on the environment, but have you ever thought about the environmental impact on your car? Well, many environmental elements can cause car damage. Let's discuss some factors that will cause you to take your car to a car body repair shop.

1. Dust and Sand

According to Bankrate, vehicle accidents vary by region and state since different areas vary in road quality. Dust and sand are an issue that you may need to worry about on some roads. Your vehicle can't hide from these substances, especially during the hot weather.

Besides hindering visibility, dust and sand can cause damage to your vehicle's exterior. These particles are abrasive, and if left on your vehicle's surface, they can scratch and damage the paint job. These blemishes may appear minor initially, but your vehicle's appearance will change more with time. If you enjoy driving on rugged terrains, wash your vehicle regularly to remove any substances that could scratch the paint.

2. Too Much UV Light

Prolonged sun exposure has a negative effect on everything, including your vehicle. While you may have no option if the only parking spot available happens to be in the sun, try to avoid too much sun exposure when possible. Just as UV light damages your skin and clothes, it also damages your vehicle's paint, causing it to chip and fade.

Apart from the exterior, UV rays can also damage your vehicle's interior. The leather upholstery and the dashboard area will fade if exposed to the sun. Get a car cover if you're always parking your car in an open place. Most covers come with UV protection.

3. Acid Rain

Acid rain is more common now than ever before. It happens when industrial pollutants enter and react with water, contaminating it. When it rains, these chemicals fall. Contaminants in the water include nitric acid and sulphuric acid. Since these substances make the rain acidic, the rain can damage any surface it lands on, including your car. When the water evaporates, your car will be left with acid residue, which can harm your vehicle's paint. Heavy rains and warm weather accelerate evaporation, decreasing the time for the acid damage to set in.

The stains and marks left on your car by acid rain can become permanent, reducing your vehicle's resale value. To prevent this damage, wash your car regularly when it rains. This will help remove the acid, preventing damage. You can also opt for solid paint that can withstand acid rain and cover your vehicle to protect it.

4. Flooding

Flooding is a common occurrence that can wreak havoc on your vehicle. Unlike other factors that only damage the exterior of your car, flooding causes interior damage. While low levels of water may have no effects, high levels may enter the car and cause significant damage, some of which may be permanent. The water can harm critical components of the vehicle.

Water damage is quite difficult to recover from. Minor flooding can result in mold growth and rusting. Furthermore, major flooding can damage the electrical system, engine, airbags, and other essential car components. To avoid this problem, avoid driving around flooded areas and get comprehensive insurance that covers flood damage.

5. Heat

Extreme heat is dangerous to your car, as it can damage your tires due to increased air pressure. Heat can also harm the protective finishes and paint coats. During hot weather, get tires designed to handle pressure. Heat can additionally damage batteries. To prevent potential issues, it's wise to park your vehicle under shade.

6. Snow and Salt

During the winter months, your vehicle does an excellent job of keeping itself warm and comfortable. It also takes quite a beating from all the salt poured on the roads. When salt combines with water and air, it can lead to corrosion. The same salt that causes the metal to corrode can also cause the paint to lift and peel off. It's essential to wash your vehicle as often as possible to remove any salt that accumulates.

While you do your best to keep your car safe and protected from the elements above, it's impossible to completely avoid Mother Nature. Practice precaution and find an enclosed space to park your car at home. Additionally, wash your vehicle regularly. If your car ends up sustaining damage, Contact City Side Auto Body today.
